No fewer than 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
